"Background to the Origins of the CAP
Planning for Real ™ began in 2003 at the Magdalen Estate in Gorleston, which is a quieter seaside resort and town adjacent to Great Yarmouth.

In 2003 the residents of the Magdalen Estate, helped by Community Connections, set up Planning for Real ™ a "Community Involvement" strategy designed to put local people at the heart of service planning and decision making process for their area

With the aid of four local schools, Planning for Real ™ constructed a giant 30 foot by 20 foot 3D model of the Magdalen. This model was displayed at the Mad Mag 2 community event held in May of that year.

Local residents were invited to write onto Ideas Flags their suggestions on how the Magdalen’s facilities and services could be improved or enhanced, and then to pin their flags onto the map. Questionnaire Pin boards were also used to ask a number of questions relating to community services, and to tabulate the demographics of the respondents (age, gender, ethnicity etc.).

After Mad Mag, a series of consultation exercises were carried out by the Magdalen Community Development Worker, who spoke with other residents, and those unable to attend the Mad Mag, for their input and ideas.

The data collected from all of the Planning for Real exercises was then analysed and collated into a document showing exactly what the local people wanted to help regenerate the area.
